Lyrics Are Powerful

This is the time of the year that I reflect on my past good or bad.  As most of you know music is my forte. Play it, listen to it, maybe work on something new. I heard a song today on my Ipod which has over 5000 songs on it. I never listen to the radio. Had not heard this song in some time and it made me think about life. Why I like the song is the reflection the person has of the past. If anyone has a song that fits your life share it. I have plenty of others that are more cheerful dare I say. This was recorded in the late 60's early 70's by Roy Clark. Many Artist have recorded the song over the years l like this version the best.  Keep in mind I played hard rock music Kiss style, Prince style and this is what I relax to. Go figure.

Seems the love I've known has always been
The most destructive kind
Yes, that's why now I feel so old
Before my time.

Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue.
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game,
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame.
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I'd always built to last on weak and shifting sand.
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of the day
And only now I see how the years ran away.

Yesterday when I was young
So many happy songs were waiting to be sung,
So many wild pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see.
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out,
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me and nothing else at all.

--- Instrumental ---

Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do.
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond.
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died.
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play.

There are so many songs in me that won't be sung,
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue.
The time has come for me to pay for
Yesterday when I was young...

You play hard rock like Kiss and Prince yet you relax to Roy Clark's "Yesterday When I Was Young", interesting ^_^

    1. I don't know about an expert? I have so many different venues that I like from all over the world. Some I picked not even knowing who they were and enjoyed the music. Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean to name a few.

  3. Lyrics are very powerful, and I have so much respect to those who are able to make their passion into a successful career, whether it's their dream to share their talent locally, internationally, or keep it to themselves. I went through an... "emo" phase in 7th grade after watching the 1st season of American Horror Story, and Nirvana and Lana del Rey pushed me through those times.

  4. You touched my heart Candido. I love Roy Clark's music and he could play any kind of music, he was amazing with his guitar. But this song, "Yesterday When I was Young" resonates with my life, as I can expect, for many people too. Life seems to get away from us with a blink of the eye and if we don't pay attention, it's gone before we know it.

    1. Sylvia, I had followed Roy Clark, James Burton (Elvis Lead Guitarist) Glen Campbell (Member of the Beach Boys for about Year when Brian Wilson got sick) and many others who never got the true recognition of being one of the greatest guitarist in the world. Clark could pick a guitar better than any Clapton, Hendrix or Santana any day. I saw Glen Campbell blow the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra away with a 12 string rendition of The Lone Ranger Theme and Classical Gas. I have never seen anyone play like that and so effortless. They were the greatest.

  5. Lyrics are powerful, especially when they elicit emotion from the listener. I love listening to all kinds of music, with the exception of heavy metal, I can only handle so much of that :)

    1. I did not play Metal per-say, More like Queensryche, Kiss, Prince stuff like that. I prefer to listen to Soft rock, Oldies, Rock, Jazz, American Indian, Island music because of drums and moods, Country and stuff like that.

  6. The music lyrics are indeed powerful, I had to go listen to the song. Music can help us remember memories that we cherish. One of my favorite songs right now is Experience by Ludovico Einaudi.

  8. Lyrics are powerful as some songs serve as motivational music for many. This music gives them the boost of energy and motivates their actions.

  9. That song was deep. Lyrics combined with the sound of music are an incredible thing. A song that touched me recently is one that I have known about for years but didn't touch me the way it did as of a few days ago.

We look up to the sky, I swear it never ends.
Walk down the road on any path we choose.
But then something changed, now days just aren’t the same.
I’m feeling so empty like part of me has been removed.

My youth is getting older. It got left out in the bitter cold.
Now I put it on the back burner where it doesn’t belong.
    Where did I go wrong?

Let me stop to ask the question, “Will I ever get the chance to repeat?”
I feel this more and more everyday. Take me back to when I used to believe.

Nothing could prepare you, but we try our best.
Failure upon failure, what happens next?
Nothing’s ever easy and life still goes on.
Don’t stop push on before you become withdrawn. I’ve become withdrawn.

My youth is getting older. It got left out in the bitter cold.
Now I put it on the back burner where it doesn’t belong.
    Where did I go wrong?

My innocence is gone. Where did I go wrong?
I feel it slipping away from me. Do you remember when we were free?

I’ve stood up on that ledge, and I know what you see:
You’re looking over the edge and wanting to leap.
I’ve written every word and expressed all my concerns.
You’re losing that part of yourself, but it wasn’t meant to be.

My youth is getting older. It got left out in the bitter cold.
Now I put it on the back burner where it doesn’t belong.
Where did I go wrong? My innocence is gone.

  11. In my experience, lyrics are powerful after drinking a lot. Otherwise I am just joking. I sing and canter to the lyrics of my own life each day. I hardly ever resonate my feelings and emotions from the lyrics of others. I love music in general, but for me, dance music is the way to go, as I always like to dance and have a good time.

  12. I grew up during the disco craze, so dance was huge. As I got older dancing became non existent except at a weddings etc.. I love music and now really appreciate what the song writer is trying to say.

  13. Yes lyrics are power we all can relate to a song or two. Even with people that are not with us anymore songs can remind us of them.

  14. Yes, I agree. I really value musicians who put the effort to write songs with deep meaning to which a large audience can relate. Like you said, lyrics have great power and can truly mean something to someone.
